Canada Proposed New Bill to Protect Immigration System

To protect the integrity of Canada's immigration system, Canadian Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney introduced a new bill named "Protecting Canada's Immigration System Act" on February 16, 2012.

The new proposal was introduced with the clear motive to keep the Canadian Immigration System under strict check. It will offer:

  • Faster and fairer reforms to the asylum system.
  • Stricter means to address human smuggling.
  • Making it mandatory for Canadian visa applicants to provide biometric data (fingerprints, photograph etc.) to visit Canada.

The proposed changes of the new bill "Protecting Canada's Immigration System Act" were built on reforms to the asylum system passed in June 2010 as part of the Balanced Refugee Reform Act.

On introducing the new bill, Minister Jason Kenney expressed that "Canadians take great pride in the generosity and compassion of our immigration and refugee programs. But they have no tolerance for those who abuse our generosity and seek to take unfair advantage of our country".

According to the Minister, these reforms are intended to stop abuse of Canada's generous immigration and refugee system. These proposed measures will help protect the integrity of Canadian immigration programs as well as the safety and security of Canadians.

"To maintain the support of Canadians for our generous immigration and refugee systems, we must demonstrate that Canada has a fair, well-managed system that does not tolerate queue jumping" he added.
