No Need for Holiday Visas to Canada for NamibiansFriday, February 10, 2012
Namibians intending to travel to Canada for less than 90 days aren't required to apply for a visa to enter the country. Valery Yiptong, public affairs officer for the High Commission of Canada in South Africa, says Namibian citizens travelling to Canada for tourism purposes for no longer than three months are visa exempt. However, Namibian nationals who plan to study or work in Canada for a longer time do need to apply for appropriate Canadian visas before traveling. Last year Air Namibia said that the Canadian government had informed them of a significant increase in the number of Namibian passport holders coming to Toronto seeking asylum. As a result, Namibia was listed as the third largest source of applications for asylum in Canada within the period from January to September. "These passengers travelling to Canada have intended to reside, or work, or study in Canada and, being without the appropriate visa, they are not properly documented for travel," cited a statement of Air Namibia. International immigration and border control laws require that every international airline must ensure that all its passengers meet the entry requirements of the country they are travelling to. As a result Air Namibia decided to carefully assess all Namibians travelling to Canada with the assistance of the Canadian government. "It should be emphasised that Namibians seeking to travel to Canada for tourism purposes must be determined as bona fide visitors," read the statement from Air Namibia.
