Canadian cities have regularly dominated the EIU studies . Vancouver, Toronto, and Calgary ranked 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively in 2011. In 2012, Toronto is the only North American city in the top 10. Washington D.C is the next North American city, following in 14th place.

Green space, pollution, internationality, cultural assets, and urban sprawl are additional evaluation factors that were introduced this year. These significantly changed the way in which rankings were calculated. The new ranking scheme scored highly for Toronto in terms of green space, pollution, and internationality.

According to Councilor Michael Thompson, chairman of Toronto's Economic Development and Culture Committee, there are so many rankings and ratings, (and) in all the rankings he had seen, "Toronto always fares well."
